Exam Results

The March Examinations have now been marked and the following cadets have been reclassified:

First Class to Leading - CDT Bedford, CDT Eyre and CDT Sorsby

Leading to Senior - CPL Bata, CDT Dadd, CDT Faulkner, CDT Graydon, CDT Green. J., CPL Hunter, CDT Nortcliffe, CPL Hosier, CPL South, CDT Thoman and CPL Wadsworth.

Well done to all and to the others cadets who took part in the exams.

Induction Evening

An induction evening for potential recruits will be held on 13th April 2011.

Interested people should have submitted their details to the staff at 218 by telephone or email and will be invited to attend along with their families to view a presentation about the Air Training Corps.

This will give you an insight into all aspects of cadet life and if you are still interested in joining after the talk you will be invited to attend squadron on a date the week after to start your career with us.

RAF CIO Visit

In a change to the training programme, the personnel from the RAF CIO Sheffield will visit 218 Sqn on 2nd March.

The evening will consist of some team building activities before break followed by a presentation about the Royal Air Force after break.

Dress for the evening will be working blues.

AIR CADETS OCEAN YOUTH TRUST SCOTLAND SAILING EXPEDITION

Places are available on the Ocean Youth Trust Scotland sailing expedition, which will take place between the 8th - 14th August.


Cadets must:
  • be over 18 years of age at the time of the expedition
  • Must be physically and medically fit to sail continuously for 7 days
  • Have passed and been awarded the Air Cadets Basic Swimming Competence Certificate
  • Must be prepared to live and work in very close proximity as a team, and to undertake varied duties as required on board (training will be given as appropriate). Conditions on-board are cramped and privacy is limited
No previous sailing experience is necessary.


Cost £350

AIR TRAINING CORPS PARACHUTE COURSE 2011

Applicatiosn are invited for the Air Training Corps Parachute course 2011, to be held between 1st - 5th May at Weston on the Green, accommodated at Read House, near Bicester Garrison.

Pre-course requirements are:
  • Aged 16 or above at start of course
  • Medically and physically fit
  • Maximum weight of 96Kg (15 Stone)
  • At least 5 foot tall
Cost £120 plus food (from £5 per day based on 'pay as you diine' options)

Form to be returned by COP 11 Mar with cheque for £120 and a passport sized photograph

Adventurous Training

The weekend of Adventurous Training has now been apporved by Wing HQ.

The event will be held on the weekend 25/03/11 to 27/03/11 at Walesby Forest Oudoor Adventure Activity Centre.

Activities we hope to include are:
  • Air Rifles
  • Archery
  • Assault Course
  • Climbing
  • Abseiling
  • Kayaking
  • Rafting
  • River Crossing
  • Search and Rescue
  • Orienteering

The cost of the weekend will be £20, names to Sgt Barnes as soon as possible with full payment, first come first served.

First night back in the New Year will be Friday 07th January - this is for staff and NCO's only.

Cadets return on Wednesday 12th January in working (dark) blues.

14th January will be inspection and subs.

19th January will be the enrolement night for the September intake.

Air Training Corps Exercise SNOW EAGLE 2011

Ex Snow Eagle 11 will take place between 25 Mar - 3 Apr 2011, if you are interested in applying for a place please see Plt Off Green.

The aim of the course is to teach complete beginners the skills of Ski Touring and an introduction to Alpine skiing.

Precourse requirements are:
  • 16 years of age over on 25 March 2011
  • Medically and physically fit
  • Hold a current passport
  • Be aware that it is for complete beginners
  • Under 18's must have parental consent
The cost of the course is £325.00 and there are 20 places for the whole of the corps.

The Drill Competition at RAF Halton, Saturday 04 December, has been cancelled due to bad weather. Please pass this message onto any cadets you have contact with.

Further details will be available from Plt Off Green on parade night, this Wednesday 01 December. At this time we do not have a new date for the competition.

Paying Respects

The Remembrance Parade was very well attended this year with hundreds of people lining the route through the town.

The Squadron joined with representatives from organisations across the borough to march firstly to Rotherham Minster, then onto the Cenotaph and finally past the Town Hall.

The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Rose McNeely, was joined by ambassadors from our twin town, St Quentin in France, to take the salute.

Change to Training Programme

In a change to the Training Programme, the cadets Christmas party will be held in the TA Centre on the evening of 10th December for all cadets, staff and invited guests.

Wednesday the 15th December will be the last parade night, this will be an entertainment night, were groups of cadets will take turns to entertain the rest of the Squadron and the Staff.

Staff and NCO's will return after the Christmas on Friday 7th January with the first parade night for cadets being Wednesday 12th January.

Help for Heroes


Cadets joined forces with the Royal Artillery to help raise funds for the Help the Heroes charity.

Shoppers at Parkgate Shopping were given an insight into the life of, and had the chance to chat with frontline soldiers.

Many thanks to all the stores who helped with this worthwhile project.

Back Home

Gaz Hughes, ex 218 Cadet, has returned home from a tour of duty in Afganistan. Congratulations go to all the personnel detached from RAF Marham on their safe return. We hope to see Gaz at 218 Sqn in the future.

Queen's Commission

Our OC, W.O.Green, has passed his regional board and is officiallly now on the first step of the commissioned route in the Volunteer Reserve (Training) of the Royal Air Force.

W.O. Green is now officially an Officer Cadet, known in the RAF as a Rodney, so congratulations Rodney Green and good luck on your Initial Officers course at RAF Cranwell.

Remembering the few - 70 years on

218 Squadron Cadets paid their respects to the fallen airmen of the Battle of Britain.

Along with the veterans and cadets from the Girls Venture Corps, they paraded from the Centotaph in Clifton park to the Rotherham Minister. Taking the salute along the route was Cllr Rose McNeely, the Mayor of Rotherham.

Football Success

Congratulations to CDT. R. Green, who represented the Squadron on the South and West Yorkshire Wing team.

Ryan took part in the Inter-wing Junior Football Competition. They won first place amongst all the wings in the North Region.

There will be Rugby and Netball trials run at Knottingley High School, Middle Lane, Knottingley, West Yorkshire WF11 0BZ.

The date is 10th October and the timings are from 1000hrs to 1230hrs only

This is essential for all cadets wanting to achieve Instructor Cadet Status and the Yellow Lanyard
